I never really did finish writing this. I wanted to get another verse in there, to clear it up a little, something like:
"I hate the church, I hate the mosque -
the temples of the new
I hate the laboratories
where they kill for me & you
But the mystery remains
It won't ever go away
The truth is more than anyone can ever say."
But that's not quite right either, & it's a verse too long as it is. I could easily keep on adding to it forever. What needs to be said though, in the end - the final word - eludes me. But then it probably always will. I like to think no-one else could have done it any better, though.
No one likes this song but me.

lyrics
Well the Atheist Society is meeting today
The young president, he should be happy & gay
But he’s cruel & he is mean
He likes to read The Selfish Gene
And the Atheist Society is meeting today
The Socialists are laying out their stall on the lawn
The Young Conservatives are going to come along
They all agree with what they’ve read
They’ve heard this living world is dead
And the Atheist Society will meet there today
Industrial scientists on the village green
Bobbing for apples that were spliced with pig's genes
They put the world under the knife
Took a patent out on life
In an Atheist society there’s no wrong no right
There’s a lot of people who’ll never care what is best
They take what they want from the world & then they shit on the rest
Not to do so would be weak
They’ll never turn the other cheek
They’d like to trample on the meek
And nothing is shocking, nothing’s obscene
If nothing is sacred what does that even mean
Every atom holds a dance
Every touch & every glance
For god is in the smallest thing
& the ground of all chance
Science & technology, they’re going to keep us alive
After a nuclear war will the fittest survive
I don’t know but I do pray
That there might be another way
But the Atheist Society is meeting today
We’ve been waiting on progress since before we were born
Still waiting for that long-promised heaven to dawn
It would be such sweet relief
We’ve just got to have belief
So the Atheist Society is meeting today
