When I was homeless, I would hitch a ride from town to town & walk the city streets with my bed on my back & sing this to myself. And to more than myself, I s'pose. I like this one very much, I feel like if you could lower a microphone into the centre of me, this is what it would sound like. This is the way I sound inside.

lyrics
See the flag slowly flying
See the birds settle down
See the cloud slowly sailing
Somewhere high over town
See the light slowly fading
as the day turns to night
The lights of the city
Are a beautiful sight
But they cover such hunger
& they dazzle & lie
See the pain on the faces
of all those passing by
As I walk through the city
I look for where you hide
Do you hide in the churches?
Where they cover their eyes?
Do you hide in the palace
With the princes & queens
Who fence off your beauty
& hunt all of our dreams?
I hear you in the silence
I feel you in the light
As the moon on the heather
washes everything white
I see you in our bodies
I see you in our smiles
In the hills & the valleys
that we’ve walked, all these miles
We are young & we’re foolish
Still we’re older than sin
Older than all the bibles
& the sorrow they bring
All my life I have sought you
All this life that is yours
Put me where I am needed
& I’ll sing till I’m hoarse
Though my people are broken
& their mouths all struck dumb
& our country seems fallen
& all truth overcome
I’ll continue to love you
& to try make it right
& I’ll spin with you slowly
here
in the holy light
in the holy,
holy
light
