The best song I ever did write. Or anyone else, for that matter.
I’m writing these notes on a cliff near Land’s End, Portheras Cove. The moon is up in the sky above my tent & spread out over the sea below like the wake of a ship, or an ultrasound scan of a baby in the belly of a woman. The light from the lighthouse in the distance going round & round. Fifty, sixty feet away from me a group of basking sharks leap up in the water. It’s the first warm night of the year, & I climb up barefoot onto the rocks, still warm from the day & I look out at the sea, & think again what a strange beast it is, so mysterious & endless. It goes right on up to the horizon. My eyes can’t see any further than that but I’m pretty sure there’s more, more than I can see.

lyrics
They’re showing adverts on the moon
It makes me want to cry
The names of corporations
Filling up the sky
They’re making a cartoon of my life
Would I like to play myself?
That they asked me, that was nice
But i need something else
As big as an ocean, my soul
As big as an ocean, my soul
You see, all that i was told was true
it all turned out to be a lie
the words of all the preachers
the politicians eyes
And they’re selling off the night
By the yard or by the pound
If you want it, get it now
Before it all breaks down
As big as an ocean, my soul
As big as an ocean, my soul
This is the age of death & reason
The age of cold machines
All reality in colour
on a billion glowing screens
The beauty is all gone
We’ve just the gods of oil & war
We have a wealth of information
But no wisdom anymore
And they’re burning witches daily
And they’re burning gypsies too
And once they’ve come for all the others
Then there’ll be only me & you
As big as an ocean, my soul
As big as an ocean, my soul
It’s deep & on fire,
It’s made of desire
As big as an ocean, my soul
*
I hear they’ve almost made the breakthrough
They’ve almost found the cure for love
There’ll be no burst of inspiration
There’ll be no sign from up above
But there’s a holiness still in us
Every heart a point of light
Like the stars up in the heavens
in this long, cold moonless night
As big as an ocean, my soul
As as big as an ocean, my soul
It’s deep & on fire,
It’s made of desire
As big as an ocean, my soul
